Hallows Eve - Philippine Style

Image
Scary! Spooky! Freaky! Ghostly! Gory! That all happens on hallows eve. On that day it would a macabre scene. But that's only in the movies. It was a different scene when I visited a corporate office in Makati. I noticed a lot of children dressed in Halloween costumes.  They followed their parents and they went around the different offices and shouted, ""trick or treats!"  Afterward, they would smile at the candies they would get. It was a festive atmosphere for corporate Makati. My grandchildren will have their own "trick or treat" activities complete with costumes and make-up as they will be joining their parents at their respective offices. My grandchildren with their Halloween make-up. Pretty scary! "I'm a big fan of the Walking Dead series" This year 2016, the Halloween holidays will be longer, because it will include October 31 and November 1 which falls on a Monday and Tuesday.  All in all, it's a 3-day r...

Are We Ready For The ASEAN Invasion?

Image
T he invasion is near! However, it's not what you all fear.  It is the ASEAN integration.  I've recently become curious about this topic and did a little bit of research. The leaders of ASEAN countries met a long time ago and agreed towards a unified ASEAN community. The ASEAN nations signed an ASEAN Charter in November 2007.    One of the objectives of a unified ASEAN community is to make ASEAN a single market and production base.  ASEAN will become a highly competitive economic region, equitably growing together economically.  It will also be fully integrated into the global economy. ASEAN has a total of 10 members namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), and Vietnam.   The ASEAN integration aims to totally remove trade barriers in all 10 ASEAN countries. So this will ensure the free flow of goods.  Along with free trade, professional services and skilled labor will also freely...

Women's Best of Two Worlds: Career and Marriage

Image
My mom, Dr. Maura B. Fonollera (she's in heaven already), wrote a book for women.  A copy of the book was gathering dust in our bookshelf, so I decided to blow the dust and browse the pages. I read the book in bits and pieces and some nourishing morsels of information can be found; and I would like to share with all of you, especially to all the "moms" out there. The copyright date on the book was 1994, so she was probably working on this book much earlier. The book was actually sold in National Bookstore, but book sales were not as fast as her other books. The topic was probably way ahead of its time.  Now I feel that the book title is more relevant. In Chapter 1 of the book, she said that "The pursuit of marriage and career is strewn with complicated webs of predicaments at interminable stages sometimes jarring even the most stable relationships. Old values come in stand against newly reached marital agreements to follow non-conventional paths such a...

Decoding Philippine Millennials

Image
There has been a lot of talk about "Millenials."  They say that this demographic generation is about to make waves all over the world come the year 2020. Why is that so?  The older generations find it hard to understand them.  They're somewhat the misunderstood generation from their point of view. I was browsing online and chanced upon an article about "Millenials".  I got curious so I search for other related articles which really got me hooked for a bit. Anyways, "millennials" are also known as Millennial Generation, Generation Y, or Gen Y. By the year 2020 half of the workforce worldwide will be composed of Millenials; and by 2030 it will go up to 75%.  That is one generation to look out for. Those events will re-define how institutions worldwide will function. Demographers (people arguing about the generations) say that the Millenials were born between 1980 up to 2000. It's still not definite and time will finally define the "Gen Y...

Must See: Train to Busan

Image
Run for your life! That's what this movie is all about.  I'm sure you'll tense up in your seat while watching zombies going on a feeding frenzy scrambling for human snacks. It's an apocalyptic movie depicting the spread of the "zombie" virus in Korea. Fast forward to the scary part, the infection would reach the train where the main characters are riding. The main characters involve a father and his daughter (played by actor Gong Yoo and Kim Soo-Ahn). He had a lukewarm relationship with her, because he was too preoccupied with work. The daughter was living with him.  He was also estranged with his wife.   At the beginning of the movie, his daughter was insisting to see her mother who lives in Busan, because she will be celebrating her birthday. The father concedes to the request of the daughter, and both were on the way to the train station while the zombie virus infection was already spreading across the country.  Both father and daughter were still c...

Capturing The Dawn in Guiuan, Eastern Samar

Image
Imagine waking up early morning facing the calm sea and listening to the gentle waves reaching the shoreline.  The sound mesmerizing you to the sweet symphony created by sea and shore.  T he morning air touching your face and refreshing your skin. The fresh salty breeze invigorating your mind and filling up your lungs accustomed to metro smog with the freshest air imaginable.  Watching as the sun slowly rising and touching the small house on one side, and the green mangroves on the other side.  As each minute passes the sun's rays also stretches out slowly reaching the island on the other side. Seeing people going about their morning chores. A lone outrigger boat (banca) cutting its way through the sea across the bay.  Not caring about the time because times moves slowly and the pace of life is so relaxed. This is paradise.  This is waking up in Guiuan, Samar, Philippines. Guiuan, Samar is quite small. It's an idyllic coastal munic...
