How to Make Your Laptop Load Faster?

Image
Photo by  Daria Shevtsova  from  Pexels You can make your laptop run faster by replacing the hard-disk drive (HDD) with a solid-state drive (SSD). Just bring your laptop to a computer shop near you and have it done by their in-house technician.  That will melt away your frustration from waiting too long, and you can get your task done right away.  I have a laptop that loads slowly, but I had solved that when I asked a technician to install an SSD inside my laptop to replace the hard-disk drive. Before the installation, my laptop took so long to load. I wait like, forever, before I can use it. It is irritating and upsets my writing mood. I often say, "Ang bagal naman!"  Sometimes, I've already done other chores and my laptop is still loading. I can only say in frustration, "Anong petsa na?  There were moments that I wanted to throw my laptop and replace it with a new one. But buying a new one would be expensive and, besides, my current laptop has some years left in it

The 72 Hours Formula for Typhoon Preparedness

Image
We all need to prepare for a coming typhoon before it hits us directly. Preparation is the key so that we will not be caught off-guard and we will not be helpless. We can easily make preparations inside our homes.   It usually takes 72 hours for rescue and relief efforts to reach disaster victims and for utilities to resume normal operation.  A lifeline kit is what we need to tide us over for 72 hours. The  Philippine Red Cross (PRC) , in one of their Facebook posts, suggests that we should have a lifeline kit on hand to allow us to survive for 72 hours.  I read online that typhoons and floods are recurring events. The Philippines, alone, experiences an average of twenty typhoons yearly. In that case, we have no choice but to prepare for them when they hit us directly.  Usually, a typhoon brings heavy rains and floods that could turn into a disaster.  That situation might isolate us in our homes or force us to evacuate. Utilities such as power, water, cellphone, and fuel may not be ava

3 Ways to Charge Your Cellphone During A Power Outage

Image
The night when typhoon Ulysses passed through Metro Manila and nearby provinces, we experienced a power outage that will last for more than 3 days. We failed to charge our cellphones and by the following morning, every cellphone inside the house went dark and left us with no communication at all. If only we had a way to charge our phones.  After the storm had left and the floodwaters had receded, I searched for options online and found 3 ways to charge your cellphone during an extended power outage. Again, I learned two things from the situation. I didn't prepare for the approaching typhoon and I didn't know how to charge a cellphone during a power outage. Of course, you can charge your cellphones using the power from your car.  But let's assume that your car was submerged by the flood. Let's also assume that you have used up the charge of your power bank. Take a look at the three options I saw online: 1. You can assemble a makeshift emergency cellphone charger that use

The Covid-19 Future in the Philippines

Image
Our future amid the covid-19 landscape will be the blended normal. That future is already happening here in the Philippines. It has been running for ten months and our lives have changed since the pandemic started.  Recently, a pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer, announced that their vaccine is already 90% effective.  But they estimate to roll it out by the middle of next year. If that happens, will we go back to our normal ways? I doubt it because the pandemic has already changed the way we see and do things. In mid-February of 2020, the Philippines closed its border for months.  The national government and local government units curtailed the movement of people and imposed strict quarantine of cities and towns to stop the spread of the virus.  Local government units also regulated the trips of their constituents to groceries, malls, and other stores by issuing a strict schedule for everyone to follow. They also enforced health standards, like social distancing and wearing face masks in pub

A Millennial's Journey to Financial Freedom

Image
I co-wrote an eBook entitled, "A Millennial's Journey to Financial Freedom," with a personal finance expert. The eBook is a fictional story of a typical Millennial who is having a hard time managing his finances. The story also contains important lessons in personal finance that can teach Millennials how to achieve financial freedom. The story is set in the Philippines. The main character in the story is Mike Santos. He gets into money trouble because of his spending habits. It came to a point where he racked up a huge credit card debt and he found it hard to get out of it. Also in the story, Mike's girlfriend Sally almost broke up with him because of his money problems.  It's a good thing that he met a kind-hearted person Mr. Roberto, who helped him solve his money problem by teaching him personal finance lessons about cash management, debt management, risk management, and wealth management. With Mr. Roberto's help, Mike pulled himself out of the debt trap to

My Thoughts on Father's Day

Image
Today is Father's day, and I decided to write a piece about it. I might regret it later if I didn't do it.  I thought that it might taste like stale bread or stale beer if I post my blog days later.  I went over to my desk and I started pounding on my laptop so I can write my thoughts down. In normal times, my family would go out to a restaurant to celebrate. It's our chance to celebrate family occasions and our chance to take posterity photos for posting on social media. After the meal, I would worry about the added pounds that will raise my fear of hypertension and diabetes. I'm nearing my senior years, that's why I'm worried. But today, I would hesitate to celebrate outside because of the coronavirus scare.  I guess fathers will have to settle celebrating this day inside the comfort of their homes and rely on food delivery. They will just have to enjoy the day posting good vibes on social media just to be safe. The Covid-19 cases are still rising out there. F

My Take on Philippine Independence Day This 2020

Image
Today marks the Independence Day of the Philippines.  President Emilio Aguinaldo led the declaration on June 12, 1898.  During the declaration, he said that we are finally breaking away from four hundred years of Spanish rule and declaring ourselves totally free from them. No ifs or buts.  Years later, they had to fight tooth and nail to prove that.  But there's a twist to the story of our independence and you'll get to know it while you continue reading. The road to independence was not easy for us as a nation.  Young idealistic young men and women whose ages can be compared to today's Filipino "Millenials" started the journey to independence. At their age, they were supposed to lead a carefree life.  But they went ahead with it anyway. It must have been tough for them. For the price of freedom, they gave up life, limb, and peace of mind for it.  A great sacrifice to ask from our heroes like Rizal, Bonifacio, Mabini, Luna, Del Pilar, Aguinaldo, Sakay, Aquino, Kud

Life in Lockdown Through The Lens of a Baby Boomer

Image
All hell broke loose at the start of the year when the Covid-19 virus spread like wildfire all over the globe.  In February it hit close to home - the Philippines. The viral infections started in Wuhan, China last December 2019, but I only read it on social media then.  Various posts said it was scary but I brushed it aside since it was far away.  When the dreaded virus reached Philippine shores, people began wearing masks. The scene was foreboding.  I still didn't wear a mask because local news said that the few infections were isolated cases. But things turned deadly serious when news from around the world reported that infected people were suffering and dying by the hundreds. Here the numbers began to surge. By mid-March, the Philippine president announced a Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine dubbed as ECQ which seemed unreal. The government sugar-coated the word - lockdown - so it would be more acceptable to the public. By the next couple of months, the ECQ mutated, like

The Road To Damascus

Image
The deadly scourge went on the rampage,  beyond the silk road and seas.  Sowing fear and death to all ages;  bringing us to our knees.  We shut the door to spare us,  and waited till we're free.  But the hourglass flipped twice over;  snatched back our glee.  Doors locked once more trapping despair.  Whom do we lift our plea?  We beg for hope in this uncertainty.  Is it found in life's modernity?  Hope did sprung from antiquity,  from the Light that shined on Saul;  On the dusty road to Damascus,  will shine on us all through eternity.  JRF

The Human Spirit

Image
Adam and Eve banished from Eden, Shares the road with the four dreaded horsemen. Their frightful blows stuns like Medusa's gaze, They be cast in stone beneath Pompeii. Humanity bruised, bloodied and broken, Lie waiting on death throes along the dusty road. When none but the dying ember remains; A flicker, a prayer, an outstretched hand; Rises man from the ashes like the Phoenix. From the bowels of Hell redeemed; From the jaws of death resurrected; The human spirit thus prevails.

The Crown

Image
We went about our normal way, And heard the news of death so far away. We didn’t mind because it was not here, But alas it’s near and we tremble in fear. When the grim reaper started to win, 'Twas medieval quarantine that locked us in. Panic, strife and hunger lie on the fringes, Boots were needed to toughen the hinges. We wore masks to mask our masks, Wishing to live and finish our daily tasks. Two arms length we needed not to reach out, But served as our measure not to freak out. Scrubs showed us our new heroes, Fighting the unseen to stave off sorrows. How can the enemy do this all? Without a big stick yet it stood tall. This was not the Crown we all would bow, Unwilling subjects forced to make a vow. Will it return to normal we don’t know? Or will it be a whole new show.                 JRF
