Capturing The Dawn in Guiuan, Eastern Samar

Image
Imagine waking up early morning facing the calm sea and listening to the gentle waves reaching the shoreline.  The sound mesmerizing you to the sweet symphony created by sea and shore.  T he morning air touching your face and refreshing your skin. The fresh salty breeze invigorating your mind and filling up your lungs accustomed to metro smog with the freshest air imaginable.  Watching as the sun slowly rising and touching the small house on one side, and the green mangroves on the other side.  As each minute passes the sun's rays also stretches out slowly reaching the island on the other side. Seeing people going about their morning chores. A lone outrigger boat (banca) cutting its way through the sea across the bay.  Not caring about the time because times moves slowly and the pace of life is so relaxed. This is paradise.  This is waking up in Guiuan, Samar, Philippines. Guiuan, Samar is quite small. It's an idyllic coastal municipality located at th

An American "Ilocano"

Image
Mel Fonollera, Blog Writer He was tall, had grey white hair and blue grey eyes which is typical of American features.  He's really an American born in Oregon.  He spoke fluent "Ilocano", a native dialect up in Northern Philippines. You don't usually get to meet an American who speaks fluent Ilocano. I was flabbergasted when I heard him speak the dialect.  I felt a bit embarrassed because I'm half-Ilocano and I don't know how to speak the dialect, because I was born in Manila. Anyways, he is the late Pastor Delbert Rice.  People whom he knows fondly calls him "Pastor.   I met him back in 2001 when I was working for  Upland Marketing Foundation Inc., a foundation devoted for social enterprise. He was the Board Chairman of that Foundation.   Fast forward in 2012, I came back to Upland Marketing Foundation, and got the chance to interact with him again through board meetings at the Foundation.  I was the "de-facto" board scribe ta

Trending: Market Consolidation Moves of Philippine Modern Trade Retailers

Image
Modern Trade grocery chains in the Philippine are now in a heated race to consolidate their market positions. SM, Robinsons, Puregold and other modern trade grocery chains are doing this right now. They're definitely going to continue this in the future. I've personally observed the progress of their market consolidation moves since I've been involved in FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) industry sector.   The mega retailers in their quest for consolidation are either doing one, both or all of the moves: o pening new branches; p artnering with foreign based retailers; i nvolvement in the different retail formats; a cquiring small local retail chains.  Here are links about the partnership of local retailers with foreign retailers.  SM and Alfamart ,  Puregold and Lawson , Shopwise and Dairy Farm . See more links to articles about the big retailers like  SM ,  Robinsons ,  Puregold Price Club  acquiring small retailers.   What will happen

Social Media in Selling? Hear Tom Hopkins About This

Image
Followed a blog by sales legend Tom Hopkins . I signed up for free videos on some of the topics. When I received the email link, went to it immediately, and one of the video titles caught my attention.  It was about "how social media is impacting the sales process?" Wow! I said to myself...Tom Hopkins sharing his thoughts about social media in selling. Guys watch and learn from the legend.      Had to share this because back in the days when I was a young salesman in my mid-twenties, there were no social media.  Selling was door to door and face-to-face.  Also, I was reading books and watching VHS video (CDs hasn't been around yet) of Tom Hopkins' sales techniques that got me all fired up to sell to customers and face rejections and successes altogether.  Now, I'm watching him talk over  YouTube  and about social media  (Cool! Awesome!)... pardon my expression just got caught in the excitement...haha    I recommend you watch the video and listen to

Online Tools and Apps to Improve Sales Productivity

Image
Today's salesperson can easily download online tools and apps to increase productivity and make selling much easier with less stress. Cool apps can get things done faster.  Apps and online tools can be easily downloaded on most smartphones using  Google Play Store  or Apple App Store . Let's take a look at some of these apps. Salespersons can send documents using  CamScanner . It's easy to download the app using any smartphone. It's also easy to use by simply taking a snapshot of the document, scan and send.  The app can also convert it to PDF file. There are situations where the salesperson  is offsite with order in hand but needs to be submitted to the office right way. The salesperson simply takes a picture of the order and use CamScanner.  Voila! the document is on the way. The action can be done anywhere as long as there is access. Losing client's business card can be frustrating.  Apps  like CamCard - Business Card Reader  easily scans and sto

Stark Trek Gazing

Image
Just a break from the usual blog on selling skills.  Went to the cinema and watched the newest Star Trek franchise.  Overall it was a good movie with all the digital effects but there were dull moments where the characters were engaged in long dialogues (hohum).. I followed Star Trek TV shows and movies since I was a kid.  In the movies, when astronauts go on space travel for a long period of time and come back to earth, didn't grow old.  Watching the new generation Star Trek movies, is like space travel.  The cast didn't grow old.  They look more younger than the original cast back in the '60s. Watching Star Trek on TV in the 60's was free and in black and white.  Now, you have to fork out 200 bucks to watch full color digital cinema. Waiting for the next episode..space the next frontier...
