The Seventies - The "Disco" Era

The seventies was undoubtedly the "disco" era.  As a teenager, I listened and danced to the distinct sound of that era. When "Saturday Night Fever" hit the movie theaters in 1978,  I became an avid fan of the Bee Gees and other bands that played the disco sound.

Besides listening to disco sound, I also mimicked dance steps like the "swing" and "L.A. shuffle" from a local popular TV show the "Penthouse Seven." I strutted my stuff every time  I danced with a partner at birthday parties held in friends' residences.

Bands that dished out disco tunes during the '70s were ABBA with their  song "Dancing Queen"; Donna Summer's  goosebumps-raising song "Last Dance."  Other bands like KC and the Sunshine BandThe TrammpsVan McCoyGloria GaynorThe Village PeopleChic, and The Jacksons also flooded the radio airwaves in the '70s.

I even followed their progress over the local radio and listened to the familiar voice of Casey Kasem's American Top 40 as he dished out trivia about performers and their songs. I eagerly awaited Casey Kasem's announcement of the song that will occupy the top spot for the week.

The U.S. disco sound had influenced local bands in the Philippines dishing out taglish versions of the disco music. The taglish version had its distinct character and was eventually dubbed the "Manila Sound".

One such local band the VST & Company was a Filipino disco group that was quite popular during the late '70s in the Philippines.  The band released disco singles such as "Swing It, Baby", "Magsayawan", "Ipagpatawad Mo", "Awitin Mo, Isasayaw Ko", and "Disco Fever".  Other groups that played the Manila Sound genre became popular, such as HotdogCinderella, and The BoyfriendsThe endemic disco sound created by local bands were aired over the radio alongside U.S. disco hits during the '70s.

If  New York had its version of the disco sound, Pinoys had their very own "Manila Sound."
